Contrary to popular belief, boats are actually much safer than cars, which inexplicably sink every time you drive them on water. Take a proper water-road ride with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get a three-hour concert cruise (a $30 value) from Rocks Off, departing from Pier 81 at 41st Street and the West Side Highway. Choose from the following dates and cruises:
- Monday, August 23, at 7 p.m.: Metal Days—80s Hair Metal Insanity
- Wednesday, August 25, at 7 p.m.: Unchained—The Mighty Van Halen Tribute
- Wednesday, September 15, at 7 p.m.: Arlene's World Famous Karaoke Band!
All three Rocks Off concert tours take place on The Temptress, the touring company's 500-capacity flagship vessel. With two levels, two full bars, and two outdoor decks, there's no shortage of space in which to engage in rock-'n'-roll-related activities. Whether headbanging a full cranium of luxurious gold manlocks to the hits of the 1980s during Metal Days, jumping away from the side of the ship while paying tribute to Van Halen, or stretching the bounds of your own vocal chords on Arlene's Rock 'n' Roll Karaoke Cruise, you'll find yourself in the midst of a thoroughly entertaining evening. Order a drink in falsetto at one of the on-board cash bars, wash down a purchased evening meal, and rock the boat by re-creating the dance scene from The Deer Hunter.
Music, alcohol, and water go together like vaudeville performers, ventriloquist dummies, and live white tigers. If you need a break from the revelry, wander to one of The Temptress's two outdoor decks and stare contemplatively out at New York's famed waterways as the boat makes its leisurely three-hour trek to and from port.
Cruises board at 7 p.m. and depart at 8 p.m.
Reviews
Though Rocks Off's cruises have yet to receive many online reviews, the company's concert cruise tours have been featured by NY Hard Rock Music Examiner, the Village Voice, and the New York Times. Jersey Beat provides an interview with Rocks Off's founder, Jake Szufnarowski, and New York magazine gave a stellar review of The Temptress, the boat that transports for the concerts. Six Yelpers give their tour experiences an average of 4.5 stars:
- Though it resembles a suburban banquet hall, the ship's blue-carpeted interior retains touches of retro charm. Two Titanic-style curved staircases lead from the dance floor to the second level—equipped with tables and wide windows with views of the Statue of Liberty. – Candace Taylor, New York
- The boats themselves are very clean with nice bathrooms, places to sit and chat, indoor and outdoor decks. – Amanda H., Yelp
- It's so nice standing out on the deck with the view of the skyline lit up at night and an awesome band playing behind you! – Louise P., Yelp
- It's the perfect combo of cool people, good music, good drinks and sick scenery. – Maurice G., Yelp
