What You'll Get
Today's side deal (or IS IT?) delivers all the suspenseful intrigue you can handle, as well as all the red herring you can eat, without the bother of being murdered. For $99, you and a companion get an interactive, role-playing murder-mystery performance, a five-course dinner, one peaceful night's slumber, and a full breakfast the next day (a $220 total value) at the Rose Manor Inn and Spa, a 19th-century National Historic home in Wills Point. Costumes are required for the whodunit hullabaloo; "hotel guest" is not a legitimate costume. You must call ahead to reserve at least one week ahead of schedule and bring your own alibi.
Upon arriving at the 1.5-acre estate, you'll be plied with wines and cheese while the tension builds. Dinner varies from week to week, but the suspicious chef, last seen with a candlestick in the observatory, has previously served up such delicacies as Cornish game hen with wild rice, green beans, and Caesar salad. After dinner, you'll don your garb and help solve a murder at Lord Farthings's conveniently spooky "castle." Once you've gathered everyone into the accusing parlor and puzzled out the culprit, you'll then retire to a period-perfect and florally intense room for two. The next morning's breakfast also varies from week to week but is usually a hearty combination of conventional breakfast fare such as toast, coffee, and egg-and-cheese casserole.
