The C.H. Brown Theater, The Poppy, The Gaiety—Roxie Theater tried on numerous identities before settling on its current moniker in 1933. Built in 1909, the theater showcased a perpetual variety show of acts before becoming an independent art-house theater in the 1970s, when live entertainment was briefly outlawed. Today, it remains committed to screening the latest foreign, artsy, and documentary films, as well as distributing its own features through Roxie Releasing. Besides its regular schedule, Roxie Theater often hosts screenings during the city's top film festivals, including Noise Pop and Frameline. The theater even spotlights local cinema with monthly Neighborhood Nightz, whose lineup only includes films made in the Bay Area.
