We can thank Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, the inventor of bowling, for introducing “The pin is mightier than the sword” and “Fortune favors the bowled” into the cultural lexicon. Heed his words of wisdom with today’s deal: for $15, you get six games of bowling plus two pairs of rental shoes at Royal Pin (up to a $30 value). Groupon customers can split the six games between any number of people and pay the difference of additional shoe rentals. This Groupon is valid at all four Royal Pin locations: Expo, Southern, Western, and Woodland.
Hurl a tri-holed sphere down the waxy way of Royal Pin's smooth, synthetic lanes and hold steady for celebratory fist pumping. When the last pin falls, strut back to the Brunswick automatic-scoring table for a pin-toppling high-five that will echo throughout the alley. In the event that the power goes out, just roll with it under the phosphorescent fantasticality of Royal Pin's cosmic bowling, a glow-in-the-dark party atmosphere in which families discuss prism theory, lovers slow-dance under stenciled stars, and Martians cry woefully for their home planet.
Royal Pin’s lanes provide bowlers of all skill levels and shoe sizes the chance to feel comfortably competitive or vigorously relaxed. Parents and children can take deeply focused breaths before each approach, because all four Royal Pin alleys are smoke free. The center offers a variety of extrabowlicular activities—not included in today's Groupon—such as lounges for lounging, pro shops for shopping, pool tables for mastering non-Euclidean geometry, and snack bars.
It's recommended to call ahead and reserve a lane.
Four Insider Pages users give the Expo location four stars:
Royal Pin’s four bowling centers boast a total of 270 gleaming lanes, but their widely varied facilities offer far more than games of tenpins. At all four locations, cosmic-bowling nights create a psychedelic atmosphere with fog, music, and black lights.
The Woodland location, though, was voted Best Bowling in Indianapolis 2012 by CityVoter and ups the ante with flat screens above the lanes and cushy couches where players recline while waiting their turn to take a ride through the pinsetter. Its adjacent outdoor mini-golf course, Pirate's Quest Mini Golf, sends putters on a salty adventure with 18 Lilliputian fairways populated by streams, waterfalls, and a pirate ship. In addition, the location recently received a makeover, with a new midway, lounge, bar and restaurant. In that same center, there's also the two-story Pirate's Quest laser tag, which combines the excitement of laser tag and swashbuckling.
At the Expo location, the theme relates to another exciting frontier: space. In Laser Storm tag, players battle for rights to moon territories. Besides their alleys, Royal Pin also manages the 5-acre Greatimes Family Fun Park, where kids zip around a go-cart track, bounce through a multilevel playland, or pilot bumper boats equipped with blaster squirt guns and highly sensitive grownup detectors.
