Unlike competitive high school dating, roller derby is not a violent bloodbath dominated by mean girls. Rather, it is a competitive sport where each team's jammer (designated by the star on her helmet and blinding speed) tries to be the first to break through an intimidating pack of blockers during two-minute "jams," evading hip thrusts, ambushes by train robbers, and a bank full of bounced body checks (deemed void if cashed from behind, and strictly penalized) in the process. During the two 30-minute periods that make up a bout, you'll witness more high-speed jam sessions than the audience during the Grateful Dead’s brief punk phase.
Despite boasting a team of 30 fierce and fearless flyers with names like Barbonic Plague, Nastalie Beating, Cyn City, and Shady Gaga, the Rubber City Rollergirls are a nonprofit organization that supports numerous causes affecting women and children. Their third annual Holiday Skate for the Kids will be held this November. Help them in their mission by watching them engage in centrifugal combat with today’s Groupon.
- For those who have yet to experience a bout in person, [Tracy] Soulsby [director of public relations and marketing for Rubber City Rollergirls] said they can expect to have a good time. – Sean Patrick, West Side Leader
