S&M Sausage and Meat

Scott Slater is no stranger to culinary experimentation. As the brains behind Slater's 50/50, a spot known for its half-beef, half-bacon burgers, Slater has a history of reinventing meat-based dishes, and S&M Sausage and Meat is another notch in his spatula. Designed with help from executive chef Mark Younggren, S&M's menu dares people to try both exotic game and modern twists on more familiar cuts. Think tacos stuffed with venison, for example, or sausages made with kangaroo, alligator, and antelope. The poutine, which the San Diego Reader called "addictive," includes smoked lamb. Pork is S&M's specialty, however, and it comes in as many variations as covers of famous Beatles quotes do, from the braised pork cheek with gorgonzola grits to crispy bacon dipped in white chocolate. All in all, the options at this "meatery" earned runner-up in the Best Small Plates category in San Diego magazine's Best Restaurants of 2015.

In that same list, S&M was also the runner-up for Best Cocktails. Indeed, the drink list is a worthy complement to the food, featuring craft cocktails layered with savory and spicy ingredients. The Lunch in Holland blends dill, brown-sugar syrup, and gin infused with caraway seeds, while the Devil's Holiday sweetens rye and tobacco with chocolate bitters. If a few drinks inspires you to keep the party going, the deli counter sells exotic sausages and private-label sauces with which to repaint the walls at home.
