With its sensuous twists and undulating curves, belly dancing can express a wide variety of emotions, from "Look at my belly!" to "See what I just did with my belly?" Learn to shimmy what you're thinking with today's Groupon: for $25, you get a seven-week belly-dancing class at Safira's Center for World Dance (a $58 value). Check the schedule for upcoming classes.
The dance doyennes at Safira's seek to bring world dance to the Wichita community while deepening their students' understanding of other cultures, toning their tummies, and improving their coordination. An array of beginners’ courses imparts the hip-shaking basics, and students can choose a specific focus for their rhythmic revelry. Twirling veils, sensual hip and belly movements, and chiming finger cymbals fill the Beginning Belly Dance course, led by experienced director Safira Zeki and her band of thumb percussionists. The Belly Sculpt course, also taught by Safira, pairs a 30-minute abs-and-back bolstering with 30 minutes of belly dancing. Meanwhile, certified yoga instructor Zahavah Noor combines yoga and hip-and-tummy shimmies in the Yo-Belly class, which can improve balance and strengthen cores.
Dancers of all genders, experience levels, and shoe sizes are welcome. Students are encouraged to wear loose-fitting clothing, and can attend class in bare feet, socks, dance shoes, or invisible roller skates. While not included with this Groupon, a belly-sculpting weight belt can further tone midsections during workouts, and can be purchased ($65) or rented ($5/week) from the studio.
