The whimsy and fantasy of famous stories and fairytales -- and their musical interpretations -- are the focus of this special evening with acclaimed violinist Martin Chalifour and the Salastina Music Society. The classic characters of Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin influenced Schumann's Fairy Tales for viola and piano, while Ravel drew his inspiration for Ma mère l'Oye from the stories of Mother Goose. Munro's Leaf's 1938 tale The Story of Ferdinand, about the bull who'd rather smell flowers than fight in a bullring, motivated British composer Ridout to set the beloved story to solo violin in the '70s, and Ivan Turgenev's short story "The Song of Love Triumphant" led to Chausson's Poème for Solo Violin and Piano Quintet. Experience the magic of storytelling through music at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Pasadena.
