What is one fun, unusual fact about your business?
Coastal rowing is the extreme version, the adventure side of rowing. It involves rowing along a sea coast and out into the sea and is one of the fastest growing communities of rowers. It is especially popular in Italy, France and Great Britain to name a few. It can be found in all corners of the world including the Maldives and many parts of Africa. Coastal rowing boats are also used inland on some lakes and rivers where the water tends not to be flat.
As the old adage says, “Stuff happens.” What training do you and your staff have to stay ahead of the unexpected?
Being safe of the water requires ongoing vigilance. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Coaches are trained through Row Canada who are the governing body of rowing in Canada. We have Jericho’s own volunteer Rescue Services. Every rowers is trained and is expected to understand the hazards of our environment. We have safety regulations and the first class reviews safety and capsize drills. All of this and more ensures that Coastal Rowing is a very safe sport.
What is the one feature of your business that you’re most proud of?
As a non profit our coastal rowing community at that of Jericho Sailing Centre are extremely supportive, kind, and love sharing their passion for the sport with others. This club has come together because individuals wanted a venue to share this passion and help it grow.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn’t cover?
Coastal Rowing enables you to go out in nearly all conditions, waves - we love them, wind - awesome challenge, rain? - who doesn’t like a little shower. Most of our rowers love going out for a row at their convenience and love distance. We regularly row 10km but can easily row 20 or 30 km is that’s what you feel like that day. It’s a non impact sport which has great physical benefits. It’s important to be comfortable on the water and in it. Although our boats are stable and capsizing is unlikely, and life jackets are mandatory, it is not the venue to address fear of open water.
