Q:

Hi, My 15 yr old daughter (16 in June) and I are wanting the 4 weeks of twice a week classes. They are labled adult classes so we are not eligible? If truly not, we could only do the 3 hr intro together then? (We are atheletic and good swimmers). Thanks

Don F.  asked on  Mar 25, 2013

A:

We do not usually have youth rowers in the adult Learn to Row classes but as long as you were taking the class with her we could arrange for her to take it as well.

Q:

For the month of classes, I assume it is once a week but what are the options for day and time?

brenda b.  asked on  Mar 25, 2013

A:

The month of classes are twice a week for four weeks. The options we offer are on our website http://sammamishrowing.org/adult-program/adult-classes/learn-to-row-classes.

Q:

If a group of 8 of us '71 Sammamish High School graduates, men and women, wanted to show up for the 3 hour session and row together in an 8 man shell could this be done with SRA's Groupon offer? Do you have coxed 4's? I rowed in college at WWU, so I know what I'm getting into. Who would be the coxswain? And what choices do we have for the day of the week and hour of the day to take the rowing class - i.e., for coordination purposes at our end of things?

al s.  asked on  Mar 23, 2013

A:

We have done private Row for a Day sessions for other groups before and would be happy to host your group as well. Unfortunately the Groupon is only redeemable for the pre-scheduled sessions which are held once a month from March through August. You can find the schedule on our website www.sammamishrowing.org For these sessions we provide the coxswains and always put two of our experienced rowers in each shell. We could split your group in to four and four so you could race against each other if you would like. The same would be true at a private Row for a Day as well unless several of you have prior rowing experience in which case we could put you all in the same boat and use those with a fair amount of experience as our experienced pair to help steer and set the boat. If you have further questions please feel free to contact me at director@srarowing and we can chat in more detail. We would love to get you all out on the lake!

Q:

I'm not a good swimmer. Will that be a problem?

candy  asked on  Mar 23, 2013

A:

For the 3 hour Row for a Day it is not a problem, however if you would like to pursue any other further rowing at SRA, you will need to pass a float test. You do this at any local pool, and you are required to tread water for 10 minutes, fully clothed, and after 10 minutes the lifeguard throws you a life jacket, which you must be able to correctly put on yourself while treading water. The lifeguard has to sign off on a form that says you successfully completed the float test.

Q:

Are there older rowers in the 50 plus category? Just wondering if age is limiting.

Victoria S.  asked on  Mar 23, 2013

A:

Yes, we have lots of 50 plus rowers in our club. Age is not a limitation. :)

Q:

If I continue on a regular basis, the two hour sessions twice a week will still be 1/2 on water and 1/2 on land?

Pauline R.  asked on  Mar 23, 2013

A:

The month long classes begin with 1 or 2 land days where we show you the basics and watch a safety video. The remaining days will be on the water (barring bad weather) practicing your rowing skills.

Q:

Hi, I'm wondering where is the new boat house located? When will it be opening? I'm hoping it might be closer to me! :)

Kimberly R.  asked on  Mar 23, 2013

A:

The new boathouse is at the same location as the old boathouse. 5022 W. Lake Sammamish Pkwy.

Q:

What sort of physical shape do I need to be in? I am 64 and do very little exercise but live on a lake and have kayaks, so would like to learn some rowing skills. Would I hold others back or slow things down if I get tired while rowing?

Lynn A.  asked on  Mar 23, 2013

A:

I would recommend the Row for a Day class first to see if you think you are able to do this sport. We have people in their 60's rowing competitively with our club.

Q:

Can a 70 y.o. female (just average condition) do this?

Marcia B.  asked on  Mar 23, 2013

A:

If you flexible enough to sit on the ground and stand back up again, you should be able to get into the boat. I would recommend the Row for a Day 3 hour class first, before signing up for the month of rowing, just to make sure you are able.
