Dancing is not only fun but also a great addition to one’s resumé, superbly complementing other skills such as singing and being a bear. Unleash inner rhythmic beasts with today’s Groupon: for $29, you get 10 hour-long community classes at San Angelo Civic Ballet (up to a $75 value). Classes held in the Civic Ballet’s three downtown studios.
In addition to bringing talented performers to the Texas stage, San Angelo Civic Ballet's skilled staff leads five types of drop-in courses that train beginners and tutu-wearing veterans to exercise the smile muscles in their feet. Future coryphées emerge from their cocoons in ballet classes that build strength and flexibility through work at the barre and across the dance floor. In the Adult Contemporary Dance class, teens and grown-ups sweat out dance fever to a fusion of ballet, modern moves, and cardio training, eschewing monotonous exercises such as bricklaying and wrestling opponents made of bricks. Alternatively, fleet-footed instructor Dorothy Noriega gives her students plenty of room to shake and strut in the newly launched Salsa classes, and the Broadway Fit class caters to movers and shakers who yearn to burn calories to the tunes of A Chorus Line or Michael Jackson’s "Thriller." During the Pilates Mat class, the mind and body team up to teach taut muscles a stretchy lesson and strengthen the core in preparation for its masked midnight attempts at vigilante justice.
San Angelo Civic Ballet holds its community classes in spacious studios with hardwood floors and ample room to maneuver. The schedule and studio location for each course is posted online, and all levels of toe tappers will leave each class with a repertoire of undulations to add to their wallflower shuffle skills.
San Angelo Civic Ballet
The San Angelo Civic Ballet is a popular organization among those who love the arts—and those who love sweating. That’s because its mission is to “reduce barriers to involvement in the art of dance,” and it achieves this through performances, formal dance classes, and fitness classes. With no fee for students’ costumes, or their participation in the season’s performances, the organization helps children from all backgrounds chase their ballerina dreams. And with Pilates and yoga classes for adults, it keeps endorphins flowing in learners of all ages.
