During the Highland Games’ caber toss, athletes loft trimmed trees up to 22 feet long in one of the most crowd-pleasing displays of Scotland’s unusual athletic tradition. At a safe distance, stone putters hurl rocks weighing up to 28 pounds. A different kind of fortitude takes the stage during the haggis-eating competition, which saddles participants with a full pound of sheep innards.

Meanwhile, four performance stages showcase a lineup of dance troupes, bagpipers, and bands including the Celtic-rock blend of Needfire, the melodic folk nuances of Beth Patterson & Patrick O’Flaherty, and Abby Green, a multitalented, Gaelic-English singer who plays the Irish bouzouki. In the seminar tent, visitors can build Irish singing and Scottish cooking skills, or watch a majestic dog parade that includes terriers, herding dogs, and gun dogs bred for the needs of Scotland’s current paintball craze. A living-history exhibit rounds out the festival with live reenactments of Viking war scenes and demonstrations of Scottish weaving techniques. See the full schedule here.<p>

About San Antonio Highland Games Association

The San Antonio Highland Games & Celtic Music Festival's annual Celtic culture and athletics festival traditionally draws thousands of real and would-be Scots for an action- and bagpipe-packed weekend each year. Male and female athletes grown bored with sports that don't involve lead hammers or young trees have traveled from as far away as Japan and Sweden to test their mettle in the athletic field’s traditional Scottish strength competitions and have 3 stages of live music to dance all weekend. The association's founders trace their lineage to numerous Scottish clans, and encourage others to explore their Celtic genealogy with festival workshops.
