Saint Anthony, or Anthony of Padua, was a Franciscan monk whose name is invoked to help return missing persons and objects. As a child, Saint Anthony’s family left for San Francisco without him, and he set out on a perilous journey through the wilderness to find them. After being chased by a bear, Saint Anthony’s cat, Sassy, fell down a waterfall. Saint Anthony had frightening encounters with a mountain lion and a porcupine. Not long after, Anthony was captured by an animal shelter, but quick thinking by Sassy freed them both. After hitching a train, Anthony was finally reunited with his family. Saint Anthony’s life story was later made into a motion picture, and San Antonio Winery is named in his honor.

Los Angeles isn’t known for its wineries or its businesses with the words San Antonio in its name, but San Antonio Winery has good reasons for violating both of these unspoken taboos. Founder Santo Cambianica left his home in the Italian province of Lombardy in 1917, and he named the winery he founded in LA’s then-bustling wine-making community after his patron saint, Saint Anthony. With today’s Groupon, $25 gets you your choice of three tasting seminars in LA’s last remaining winery (a $50 value).

Each of the tastings includes all you can eat food and drink, and is led by friendly, personable (and not-wine-snobby) staff. Your three options include two wine-tasting seminars: “Taste of Americas,” on Sunday, September 20, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., or “Taste of Italy,” on Sunday, October 18, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. If wine’s not your teddy bear, try the beer-tasting seminar, “Boutique Beer Tasting and Food Pairing,” on Sunday, August 9 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

As the only winery in the city, San Antonio Winery is a designated historic landmark, but unlike other, boring historic landmarks, you can drink wine at this one. And unlike those quitters who stopped making alcohol during Prohibition, San Antonio Winery obtained permission to continue making altar wine for religious services. Now, this family-owned winery is a hidden treasure secluded among non-historic warehouses in Lincoln Heights. Driving to the picturesque winery (which is also a restaurant) is like driving to a personal hideaway to fulfill all of your vine-covered, oak-barreled, wine-tasting desires. Taking any other form of transportation is like taking a helicopter to the same location.

Check out what reviewers on Yelp have to say about San Antonio Winery: > * I’d encourage anyone to at least experience a wine tasting in his or her lifetime, it’s quite worth it. The employees at the San Antonio Winery really do know what wine should taste like and their vast knowledge of wine is simply remarkable! – Alan E. > * …this is the place I bring out of town friends to when I want to impress them with “classic LA.” I love that its secluded (we are talking in the middle of a bunch of factories) but that’s what makes it so cool…you walk in and can just feel the great vibe. – Jacks S.
