Shakespeare himself said that there were only so many stories in the world and that the rest were variations of those original few. Today’s side deal follows the bard’s words by retelling one of his most famous tragedies through dance. For $20 you get a ticket to Romeo and Juliet as interpreted by the esteemed San Diego Ballet for one of four February performances (a $40 value). Celebrate the Ballet’s 20th year with one of its best-loved shows as directed and choreographed by Javier Velasco at Lyceum Theatre’s Stage Theatre in Horton Plaza.
If professional athletes can practice ballet, then certainly a steamed Mercutio can wield a mighty sword while sashaying to his death. Learn the stunning grace and ceaseless energy of beautiful movement as you learn that no family quarrel is worth extending across generations. The San Diego Ballet incorporates classical and contemporary stylings to tell Sergei Prokofiev’s dancing translation of Shakespeare. The poetry on the page will be transformed into dance right before your cultured and teary eyes.
Two Yelpers sing the praises of the company, and SanDiego.com and Ballet.co Magazine have some flourishy things to say about the San Diego Ballet: > * The emphasis is on dancing, rather than theater. The principal dancers are outstanding. – Kris Eitland, SanDiego.com > * It seems that San Diego finally has a ballet entity that has left behind any semblance to pre-professional dance status. One can only hope that the citizens of this area will recognize the opportunity and enjoy this gift of a company. – Anjuli Bai, Ballet.co Magazine
And check out what Yelpers have to say about Lyceum Theatre, giving it 4.5 stars: > * …I’ve seen some superb and stimulating performances here…There is always interesting art showing around the hall…and the location makes it easy to grab dinner and/or drinks before or after the show. – Patricia V., Yelp
