Among the most popular objects to brandish on horseback, the polo mallet ranks third behind swords and carrots dangling from fishing poles. Wield a steed with today's Groupon: for $69, you get three introductory polo lessons from the San Diego Polo Club (a $140 value).

The San Diego Polo Club, which is nestled on 60 acres in Rancho Santa Fe, welcomes novices to learn the basics of horse mounting and ball clobbering during three one-hour lessons. The friendly staff equip polo protégés with all the necessary gear, including tack, mallet, helmet, and a school horse equipped with a fake unicorn horn used to intimidate opponents. Study hitting techniques and game strategy with five other students in a wood-fenced arena with a soft dirt floor for maximum equine agility. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m., or on Saturdays at 10 a.m.

San Diego Polo Club

The story of how the game of polo traveled from the hills of northern Persia to the immaculate field at the San Diego Polo Club has taken centuries to unfold. But the fast-paced play of those first games remains in tact during the club’s Sunday matches. World-class and amateur players alike have come from distant countries such as Argentina, New Zealand, and Horseyland to perform for an audience dressed in their Sunday best, sipping cocktails from two full bars and noshing on fare from the bistro, or surveying the scene field-side while tailgating.

Ever the sport of the aristocracy, the San Diego Polo Club provides tips on what to wear to its events. Extra sartorial attention is paid to each summer’s celebrated Opening Day. Those unfamiliar with the rules of polo or the eligibility of centaurs can find a helpful introduction to the sport by clicking here.

Great afternoon to spend in the warm sun while watching Polo. The horses are beautiful and ridden by experienced Polo players. Food and drinks are available so you can stay hydrated and energized. At the last event, the SD Polo Club brought in old vintage planes, flown by their owners/pilots that were interesting to look at and during half time, there is an activity of where everyone gets up and goes out to the field and stomps down the grass that was pulled up from Polo players and horses. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.
