What You'll Get
Ever wonder what an invading army of sheep would sound like? Well, that's just one of the marvelously inventive scenarios composer Richard Strauss brings to life through music in his tone poem setting of one of the great literary works, Don Quixote. To capture the right effect, he helped pioneer the technique of "flutter-tonguing" among the brass section. Johannes Moser, "one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists" (Gramophone) will bring the Don to life, while Chi-Yuan Chen captures the comic sidekick, Sancho Panza, on the viola. The piece is just one of a trio of masterworks you'll hear in this San Diego Symphony concert conducted by maestro Jahja Ling. Also on the program are Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, which recalls his (possibly) happiest day of married life, and Franz Schubert's mysterious yet glorious "Unfinished Symphony." You won't want to miss Fantastic Variations at Jacobs Music Center.
