About Sanai's Restaurant
Perhaps because he rose to prominence playing a sport with its own storied history, basketball star L. Terry Dehere feels the pull of the past strongly. He could have settled anywhere after retiring from the NBA, but he chose Jersey City—his hometown, where he played his first pick-up games and drew his first smiley face on a basketball. Once he returned, he opened Sanai's Restaurant in the city's oldest standing building, a two-story Dutch colonial structure built in 1690.
Today, Dehere's eatery is both rooted in history and brimming with modern luxuries. Sumptuous curtained booths, for instance, where visitors can wash down oven-roasted chicken and portobello linguini with cocktails from the full bar. The menu of classic American cuisine is Sanai's biggest draw, but there are others, such as the fact that there's usually a live DJ and a live singer performing on the premises.
