Teapots were originally triangular, leading to confusion with another appliance and much consternation when tea would slosh out during ironing. Celebrate tea's modern curvaceous vessel with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of tea and lighter fare at Savannah Tea Company in historic Germantown.
Savannah Tea Company makes its dainty quiches, pastries, salads, and other menu items from scratch in its cozy brewing bungalow. At lunchtime, savor the sweet and salty symphony of a ham and apricot panini on rosemary bread ($8.95), or nosh on a strawberry and spinach salad peppered with blue cheese and walnuts ($7.95). All lunch entrees are served with fresh fruit, frozen cranberry salad, and muffins. Choose from more than 100 varieties of tea, ranging from lavender and Earl Grey to caramel cherry cheesecake and bohemian raspberry rooibos ($3.25 each). Light afternoon tea includes scones, muffins, clotted cream and jam (by request), desserts and pastries, finger sandwiches, fresh fruit, and sorbet ($18.95). Full afternoon tea is fancifully fortified by quiche and a cup of soup ($21.95).
Savannah Tea Company's richly hued walls are lined with delicate painted teacups and other trinkets, and quaint wooden shutters adorn tall windows that look out onto a yard full of gossipy, over-caffeinated sparrows. Call ahead to make a reservation for afternoon tea service.
