It was great. Definitely interested in checking out some other classes they offer.

What You'll Get

A good poker face is essential when trying to bluff competitors, convincing them that a pair of threes is actually a full house, or a pair of Tops ’92 rookie cards is actually a pair of threes. Learn to keep the competition guessing with today's Groupon: for $39, you get an Intro to Poker or Strategic Blackjack class at School of Cards (a $150 value).

School of Cards' team of professional instructors coaches card-slinging cadets in three-hour beginners' classes within casino-style classrooms. Introduction to Poker interactively guides up to 10 rookies along the path toward mastering no-limit hold 'em. Immersed in a realistic environment, complete with professional tables, authentic chips and cards, and a dealer, students learn every step of game play, from arrival at the table in gaze-shielding astronaut helmets to cashing out afterward. All participants are given a laminated reference sheet with the fundamental rules of the game, which players can consult during and after the class, as well as useful tips, basic strategies, and rules of poker etiquette along the way. At the end of the course, a class tournament pits students against each other in a battle for prizes, and everyone leaves with invitations to New York poker events and a new repertoire of card lingo to drop during heated games of solitaire.

Strategic Blackjack illuminates the intricacies of playing the notorious 21-point table game. Up to seven trainees per class learn to reduce the casino's edge down to one half of a percent through the practice of several effective methods, such as employing the same card-counting system used by the MIT blackjack team and distracting the dealer by counting the cards out loud. Protégés in both classes can sip on two complimentary drinks while debating whether to fold or go all in, and all players emerge from the sessions with an understanding of how to maximize profits and with the confidence to sit in at competitive tables.

About School of Cards

The instructors at School of Cards aren’t content only to use their card knowledge in the classroom; when they’re not teaching, they’re competing in high-stakes cash games and tournaments, including World Series of Poker events. Although their training grounds resemble a cozy living room complete with a plush, microfiber couch, the school’s professional poker and blackjack tables demonstrate its intent to make students comfortable in the casino environment. Beginning blackjack and poker players can get their start in three-hour introductory classes, learning such fundamentals as game etiquette, card counting, and how to spot edible chips. Intermediate and advanced players move on to more in-depth courses, as well as services such as game and body-language evaluation.
