- For $179, you get an entry-level open-water certification program (a $399 value).<p>
Customers who purchase the open water certification course must provide their own mask, snorkel, boots, and scuba fins.
Scuba Centers of Michigan unlocks underwater travel to divers aged 10 and older with courses taught by a team of SSI- and PADI-certified instructors. Each 2.5-hour Try Scuba session commences in the classroom, where instructors take about 30 minutes to explain equipment and teach essential in-water skills such as how to breathe pressurized air or avoid turf wars with mermaids. Classes then trek to the facility’s indoor heated pool, where students practice these skills under direct supervision. Scuba Centers provides all diving equipment for the Try Scuba class, though participants must bring their own swimsuits, towels, and waterproof maps of Atlantis.
The entry-level open-water certification course spans six weeks and includes sessions in the classroom and indoor pool as well as four open-water dives split into two pool and two outdoor dives. A series of daytime, evening, or weekend group classes includes up to 52 hours of academic instruction and practical training. Students can complete the open-water dives locally or request a universal referral to perform the dives at a resort or restaurant koi pond. Upon completion, Scuba Centers of Michigan bestows each graduate with an internationally recognized SSI certificate and offers all participants free unlimited use of the pool for life.

About Scuba Centers of Michigan
The diver double-checks all her gear before leaving the surefootedness of the boat and falling into the deep water, where she explores shipwrecks and seemingly untouched expanses throughout the Michigan Underwater Preserves in the Great Lakes. The team of PADI- and SSI-certified instructors at Scuba Centers of Michigan helps students prepare for these types of adventures every day, covering advanced topics such as diving at night and how to properly greet a sturgeon. The instructors also start from the beginning, teaching basic open-water diving techniques, which their pupils practice in the onsite heated pool. To complement its courses, the center stocks gear from equipment brands such as McNett, Aqua Lung, and Suunto, and it organizes diving trips to South Africa and Australia.
