Similar to tickling a bear without losing an arm, the art of breathing underwater requires years of practice and dedication. Introduce your lungs to aqueous awareness with today’s Groupon to Scuba Shack in Rocky Hill. Choose between the following options:
- For $12, you get a one-hour Discover Scuba class with all scuba gear provided (a $25 value).
- For $169, you get a scuba diving–certification course (a $460 total value). This option includes:
- A group certification course (a $275 value).
- Open-water fees (an $80 value).
- Course materials, including textbook, instructional DVD, and log book (a $105 value).<p>
Students in the certification course must provide their own equipment, including mask, snorkel, fins, and boots.
The instructors at Scuba Shack introduce new divers to the joys of undersea exploration and advance burgeoning divers’ scuba acumen with PADI open water–certification courses. During the one-hour Discover Scuba class, nautical neophytes strap on rental gear and plunge into an indoor pool guided by experienced instructors fluent in dolphin echolocation. In either large groups or private sessions, students learn basic scuba skills and safety rules as well as how to control diving depths, monitor air supply, and sing Air Supply’s “All Out of Love” through the respirator.
In more rigorous PADI open water–diving-certification courses, groups of 5 to 10 more experienced divers learn to independently plumb the ocean’s fathoms in seven weekly meetings. More than a dozen hours of classroom time prepare pupils for several in-pool and open-water dives, which ramp up in intensity as divers’ skills develop. At the end of the intensive course, students amass the requisite knowledge to solo-dive safely, especially during rush-hour currents.
When Scuba Shack's founders attained their first certifications more than 34 years ago, they were frustrated with the inadequate teaching they received. As their dive careers continued, that dissatisfaction led them to create Scuba Shack, where their goal is to imbue every one of their lessons with tangible value for burgeoning divers. Their class schedule brims with PADI–certification courses, and introductory scuba classes help beginners to recite the first 100 decimals of pi before coming to the surface for air. The shack also has an onsite store overflowing with necessary gear such as snorkels, fins, and masks, required for many of the Scuba Shack's classes or group-travel dives.
