Breathing underwater, like eating fireworks, constructing a monument, and getting married, should only be attempted if you're confident you can do it. Today's Groupon gives you all the skills you need to mingle with the mermaids: for $180, you get a scuba-certification course at Scuba Ventures (a $365 value).
An SSI Platinum Pro facility, Scuba Ventures leads budding underwater breathers to full scuba certification. After calling the facility to enroll in a comprehensive course, students receive an informational DVD at their first class, allowing preliminary study sessions to coincide with domestic chores such as fixing holes in socks and donuts. Then, across three classroom sessions and three pool practice sessions, a certified instructor introduces pupils to basic scuba techniques and equipment. Certification happens when students apply their newly acquired gill skills to a monthly-held local open-water dive. Though this Groupon only covers the cost of certification, more adventurous divers can instead obtain certification on an exotic Caribbean dive. Scuba Ventures provides students with a mouthpiece kit in addition to most scuba equipment; divers must purchase their own mask, fins, snorkel, and singing crab prior to the course.
With more than 13,000 divers certified under their tutelage since 1975, Scuba Ventures' instructors, dive-control specialists, and dive masters guide pupils through the three steps toward scuba certification. Students first learn diving and safety fundamentals during classroom training and practice sessions in Scuba Ventures' heated indoor pool. Then teachers whisk them away on two-day open-water training trips to locales such as the Caribbean or Lake Ouachita where, upon successful completion, they earn an open-water certification card and a free back scratch from a puffer fish.
Instructors also teach an array of training courses ranging from spearfishing sessions to lessons in underwater photography. Scuba Ventures also sponsors dive trips throughout the year, which guests can stock up for by renting or purchasing brand-name gear from the shop.
