Without boating, Popeye the sailor would have become Popeye the inarticulate district attorney. Rebuff Popeye's lawmaking alter ego and uphold his sea-conquering persona with today's Groupon: for $99, you get a two-day Sailing 101 class from Seaforth Boat Rentals (a $249 value), located in Coronado.
The Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101) lets aspiring sailors learn the basics of nautical exploring while cruising the San Diego Bay on a Capri 22'. An expert American Sailing Associate–certified sailing instructor will impart handy seafaring practices and proper etiquette via the mental sonar abilities possessed by every mariner. The course also includes a loan of the requisite literature—the ASA's Sailing Made Easy, which spells out boating regulations, sailing lexicon, and how to turn a trident into a makeshift banjo.
Your two-day course will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a Saturday and Sunday and will likely put you at the helm during moderate wind and sea conditions. Prior experience is not required, as you'll learn the basics in a fun and excitingly hydrating atmosphere. Class sizes of three to four students will ensure that you get plenty of individual attention until you're ready to captain the legendary three-hour tour that will one day be commemorated in a sitcom theme song. Completing the course earns you certification to rent and sail boats up to 25 feet and a prerequisite to take several other ASA classes, including the ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising and the ASA 103/104 Combo Catalina Trip class.
If you choose to become a certified member, the American Sailing Association requires a one-time mandatory fee of $39 for the ASA 101 class. This fee will include a one-year membership to ASA, a certification seal, ASA magazine, and an ASA-certified sailor ID card. This cost is optional but is not included in today's Groupon.
