Two icons of British royalty, Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I, fight for the throne in this powerful tale of pity, menace and remorse. In this first-rate production, Mary is stuck in prison and must rely on a band of rebellious conspirators. Elizabeth hesitates to sign Mary's death sentence but knows she must do something to keep her claim to the throne. History buffs may know how the rivalry ends, but that doesn't make the journey any less riveting. Performed in Italian with English subtitles, this haunting Seattle Opera production of Mary Stuart, filled with extravagant period costumes and virtuosic singing, can be seen at Seattle's McCaw Hall.
