Chicago, that beacon of hearty food, big beers, and warm, no-frills friendliness, is much closer than Phoenix residents might realize. It's right on Central Avenue, inhabiting a restaurant and lounge called Seay's. At once dapper and approachable, Seay's pairs a neat and sophisticated dress code with a menu of hot dogs and Polish sausages. In addition to these Midwest favorites, the menu incorporates bites from the South such as catfish nuggets, wings, and waffles seared with country lyrics.
The fare may inspire some finger-licking and bib-wringing, but the environment trends toward the upscale. On the ground level is The Savoy, and it's Seay's lounge. Here, patrons float atop a smooth wave of soft R&B and hip-hop. On the second level is a barbershop and upstairs is the Juke Joint, a nightclub where dance-friendly pop and alternative hip-hop course through the air.
