Throughout the ages, theaters have allowed us to witness true artistic magic, from actors that can turn stage props into cake to spotlights that explode when you wink at them. Enjoy the magic of theater with today's Groupon: for $35, you get one single-admission ticket to Second Stage Theatre (up to a $75 value). Senior tickets are $67.50 and box tickets are $60. Shows are not recommended for children age 12 and under.
Second Stage produces work by respected playwrights and helps emerging authors heat up the stage with fresh crowd-pleasing talent. This season, audiences can enjoy productions such as the world premiere of By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, which starts in April. Created by Pulitzer Prize–winning playscribe Lynn Nottage, the show delves into the life and legacy of African-American actress Vera Stark.
Founded by Artistic Director Carole Rothman more than three decades ago, Second Stage was originally designed to give second stagings to plays that couldn’t get an audience because of scheduling issues, inappropriate venues, unexpected ice ages, or limited performance runs. Over the years, it has evolved into an off-Broadway institution, gobbling up myriad awards in the process. Its most recent awards include three Tonys in 2009 for the musical Next to Normal.
- I was surprised at the size of the theater - very cozy. You will definitely have a great view no matter where you sit – Jackie N., Yelp, 8/28/10
