Once one of the largest liquor producers in the world, the enormous complex of the Gooderham and Worts Distillery used to turn out millions of gallons a year and contribute more taxes to the government than any other single enterprise. After closing in 1990 following 153 years of continuous operation, the distillery's buildings remained the largest collection of Victorian industrial architecture in North America, playing host to hundreds of movie sets while the interiors lay fallow.
Beginning in 2001, an ambitious renovation program transformed the district into a thriving village, overflowing with art, food, and entertainment while preserving the area's historic architecture. Todays, dozens of restaurants, art galleries, and theatres occupy the antique brick structures, welcoming visitors as they walk around the pedestrian-only district and make faces at the excluded cars outside.
