Lewis and Clark were a frownful bunch because they were forced to tour the brimbles and brambles of the wilderness by foot. Today's Groupon gives you a discoverer's eyes with a Robocop's wheels. For $35, you get a 1- to 1.5-hour Segway tour of the Balboa Peninsula from Segway Orange County (a $70 value after tax). Tours are available seven days a week. Call at least 24 hours in advance and mention Groupon to book your tour.
Named for Spanish conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa, who crossed the Isthmus of Panama by Segway in 1513, the Balboa Peninsula is 3 miles of prime Pacific property ideal for this laid-back 60- to 90-minute Segway tour. As you coast down the peninsula, you'll encounter numerous points of interest along the Balboa Pier and the famous boardwalk. You'll pass impressive beachfront homes as you take in the sparkle of the beach's white sands and the Pacific's blue smile. Motivated by your new height atop the Segway, you'll be tempted to reach up and declare a thumb war on those riding the Ferris wheel at the Balboa Fun Zone amusement park, or to shake the hand of a palm tree as you pass under its fronds. Once you arrive at The Wedge, the world-famous surfing spot noted for its seismic swells, you'll feel sun-kissed sympathy for the poor souls who are stuck walking down the very same peninsular route upon which you glided.
A knowledgeable guide leads each of Segway Orange County's tours, dropping anecdotes aplenty about the Balboa Peninsula and its history. All Segway riders must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Helmets and training are included in each tour, although the Segway's advanced motors and mechanisms do much of the work in keeping you balanced and upright as you wheel across the Balboa Peninsula. This Groupon is not valid for Segway tours down the Apollo Creed Peninsula, the Clubber Lang Strait, or the Ivan Drago Boardwalk.

Segway Orange County
Though they met through the RV business, Jim Headley and Dick Burke bonded over their excitement for a different mode of transportation. They opened Segway Orange County in 2004, and have since been matching customers with Segway i2 and Segway i180 models. Their shop hosts orientations for new owners, bringing Segway representatives in to coach attendees on the machine's operation and safety features before their first ride. The training also kicks off each of Segway Orange County's guided tours, which whisk visitors on 60- to 90-minute jaunts through Newport Pier or the Balboa Peninsula. Riding atop their Segway PT, patrons glide past sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, beachfront homes, and boardwalk highlights such as the lone wizard who controls the tides with a series of pulleys.
