Paints & glazes embellish ceramic plates, mugs, piggy banks & pet bowls before master potters fire-finish artworks in kiln
Few things can catch a snack thief red-handed as efficiently as a freshly painted crimson cookie jar. Keep track of your sweet stock with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of ceramics and studio time at Seize the Clay.
Unembellished ceramics line the shelves at Seize the Clay, where children and adults call forth colorful, utilitarian artworks such as plates, vases, and pet bowls. Studio time ($7/visit) includes all materials necessary to paint a distinctive sculptural object culled from the studio’s assortment of more than 300 pieces ($12–$35 each on average). After carefully selecting a clay canvas, artists dip their brushes into a vast selection of paints to emblazon coffee mugs with monograms and piggy banks with smiles that stay constant in the face of sure destruction. Throughout the session, staff members wait nearby to help with advanced painting techniques and intricate line work. The master glazers then load completed pieces into the kiln, where they incubate for three to five days before reuniting with their creators.

About Seize the Clay
A piggy bank covered in polka dots, a platter celebrating Mother’s Day complete with each of her children’s handprints, a ceramic replica of Sesame Street’s Ernie—these are just a few of the projects that have emerged from Seize the Clay, a hands-on art studio specializing in pottery painting. In addition to embellishing various bisque pieces with unique designs, visitors can create glass-fused pendants, multihued mosaics. They can also try their hands at the potter’s wheel, hold birthday parties, or attend an interactive summer camp.
