Settlers Pond Shelter

Settlers Pond Shelter was born of one woman's mission to rescue and rehabilitate animals of all species. For more than 15 years, Pinky Janota has traveled a circuit through seven states, picking up abused and abandoned animals. She specializes in exotic species, particularly marsupials, but she also takes in dogs, cats, and even squirrels who need help. She provides the creatures with habitats, food, time, and medicine to help them recover from their difficulties. Such benefits are expensive, so she funds her activities by opening the shelter to the public.

Visitors can stop by and interact with goats and sheep in an indoor petting zoo, wander the Joyce Dennehy Exhibit and see enormous African Spurred Sulcuta Tortoises, or meet the Shelter's unofficial mascot, Jack the Red Kangaroo. Though all proceeds benefit them, the animals aren't the only form of entertainment around. The grounds contain corn mazes, a museum full of toy tractors, and even a putt-putt mini-golf course. During holiday seasons, Pinky and her husband Rolly put on huge themed events, inviting people to pick pumpkins from a patch they cultivate during Halloween or apologize to a turkey on Thanksgiving.
