Running was the first sport, born of a need to escape predators and traumatic games of dodgeball, which, come to think of it, was actually the first sport. Run wild with this Groupon.

The Bay Area’s Halloween costumes come out early for the inaugural Helluva Halloween 5K costume run that takes place Saturday, October 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Golden Gate Park Polo Fields Stables (check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.). In addition to the run (or walk, if preferred), there will be live music, food and drinks, a raffle, kids’ activities, and an after-party. Proceeds from the event will go toward helping the Sunset Cooperative Nursery School give kids a play-based environment where they can learn art, music, science, math, dance, and storytelling, among other subjects. The donation option is designed for those who can’t make the race but want to help the nursery school’s cause.
SF Mad Dash
SF Mad Dash’s Helluva Halloween 5K run comes as close as any event to answering the question “Who would win in a race: Frankenstein or Dracula?” That’s because the run encourages attendees to dress up in their Halloween costumes and run or walk around Golden Gate Park. Though entertaining on the surface, the core of the fall festivities is charitable, as all of the proceeds benefit the Sunset Cooperative Nursery School.
