I have never heard of this type of wine before, where does this fall between a cabernet, merlot, pinot noir, or a malbec ( an Argentinian red wine )?

The closest grape varietal to this is Syrah. It is also known as Grenache, a French varietal used in the south of France to make Rhone valley wines. It is dark red, smooth and full bodied.
