The Deal

  • $250 for a Mountain House tour flight for two ($420 value)

Flights depart from Talkeetna Airport. From the cabin of a Cessna 185 or de Havilland Beaver, passengers absorb breathtaking views of Mount McKinley’s south face, soar high above the Tokositna Glacier, and zip through the Ruth Glacier’s Great Gorge, the deepest in North America. The flight’s ultimate destination is a flyover of the Don Sheldon Amphitheatre and the Mountain House shelter built by the company’s founder’s father. The tour affords an opportunity to land at Ruth Glacier, which costs an extra $75 and adds another 30 minutes to the tour’s duration.

Sheldon Air Service

According to Malcom Gladwell’s hypothesis from Outliers, it takes 10,000 hours of practice in a field to reach the heights of success achieved by Bill Gates, the Beatles, and other icons. This makes Sheldon Air Service’s David Lee the Paul McCartney of pilots—every time he takes to the air, Lee draws upon experience gained during more than three decades of experience and 12,000 flight hours.

Lee’s carefully honed talent—and his specialization in glacier landings—makes him an ideal guide for the company’s three flightseeing tours. One heads to the Mountain House Shelter, which founder Don Sheldon built, while others glide to Kahiltna Glacier Base Camp or Denali National Park. The air service can also aid arctic adventurers, offering air support to mountaineering expeditions or skyward tracking of the Iditarod’s meandering course.

Customer Reviews

We loved the ride even though we couldn't land on the glacier due to being late in the season we were still amazed at what we did see. Our pilot was able to get close to the glaciers and we saw lots of moose and bears and cubs as well. And being on a small plane, I was a bit nervous about the landing and it was smoother than the big 737s, didn't even feel a bump. The pilot has 37 years of experience and you can tell he still loves his job. Awesome experience and I would highly recommend it!!
