What You'll Get
Hunger, unlike ambulance sirens, meningitis, and restraining orders, is not something you can safely ignore. Answer the mighty call of a bellowing belly with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of upscale fare and drinks at Shields Manor Bistro in Platte City. Shields Manor Bistro is open Thursday–Saturday.
Espoused epicureans Max and DeDe Shields team up to man the pots and pans in Shields Manor Bistro, which inhabits a historic, 1850s house that's oozing with old-fashioned romance. Diners who frequently fall prey to bouts of dietary indecision will appreciate the bistro's short-but-sweet, monthly changing menu, which is currently topped by blue- cheese shrimp, a vampire-vexing mélange of garlicky sautéed shrimp and melted blue cheese presented elegantly in a martini glass ($12.00, serves two guests). Hudson Valley grilled duckling with a raspberry-chipotle rub and sweet-potato soufflé ($36) is one of this month's featured entrees, as is steak au poivre, a 7 oz. fillet laid between a fluffy mattress of Yukon mashed potatoes and a warm blanket of peppery cognac sauce ($36). Save a shelf in your belly's taste library for one of Max's signature desserts ($5–$8) such as Platte County black-bottom pie, a blissful marriage of crunchy walnuts and smooth, rich chocolate.
After a warm greeting from Max in Shields Manor's charming foyer, arriving customers are led to either the historic home's cozy parlor or den, both of which serve as the current bistro's dining rooms. Attentive waiters weave through the tables wearing crisp white gloves, and roses adorn every candlelit table, providing an ideal backdrop for romantic lash batting and question popping. Even if your feelings toward your dinner date are purely platonic, Shields Manor's elegant and intimate atmosphere will invoke the sense that you're at a swanky Victorian supper party, sans insipid Whigs vs. Tories dinner debates.
This Groupon is valid for dine-in only, and reservations are required. Not valid for alcohol.
- In all the years that I've been reviewing restaurants, I don't remember ever visiting a venue and tasting everything on the menu at one sitting. That was before I discovered Shields Manor Bistro.

- Regulars have learned to order Max's Platte County Black Bottom Pie early, lest he run out; the black walnut and chocolate pie is naughtily addictive. – Gayot
