A dance class can teach anyone to move with grace through bee attacks, while getting served in front of a blind date, or during mega-prom. Achieve confident feet with today’s Groupon: for $15, new students get three drop-in dance classes of their choice (a $45 value) at ShoeBox Studio in SoMa. This Groupon is not valid for discount classes (salsa, dance conditioning/yoga Pilates combo, and $5 Pilates). All classes must be used within six months.
Part high-energy workout and part world tour for the feet, ShoeBox’s constantly changing lineup of classes mingles multicultural movement with modern flourishes. Beginners can build a foundation for dance technique with Fusion Bellydance, which unlocks total freedom of movement by blending Pilates, yoga, and undulating anatomy into a brightly colored margarita of strength-building drills, postures, and alignments. Once your body can move however it wants, give it new ways to move with adult beginning ballet or mixed-level hip-hop. Otherwise, build enough stamina to shimmy through 20-minute musical numbers with the Bollywood class, where you’ll master such classic Indian dance moves as petting the dog and twisting the lightbulb, not quite kissing, and changing costumes instantaneously. Drop in through the skylight for any of the 16 classes ShoeBox schedules each week (the latest schedule can be accessed through ShoeBox’s website).
Because overly crowded dance floors can erupt into war-torn battlefields with a single squashed toe, ShoeBox’s intimate boutique studio purposely keeps things small to build a tight rapport between teachers and students. Dubbed the Best Dance Studio in 2009 by readers of SF Weekly, ShoeBox’s all-inclusive atmosphere makes it easy for brick-footed beginners to bond with their dancer and athlete classmates.
New students only.
