Part of the Indy Wine Trail, Simmons Winery is helmed by David and Brenda Simmons, who tend to 12 acres of vineyards on a 120-year-old farm. Flourishing under plentiful sunlight and Mr. Sun’s positive reinforcement, gently rolling slopes nourish four white and four red varietals, which the vintners transform into 27 wines including reds, whites, blushes, and fruit wines. Tasters may sample such quaffs as the 2009 vignoles—a semi-dry French hybrid that won Double Gold at the 2011 Indy International Wine Competition—or David’s personal favorite, the dry red marechal foch. Other popular Dionysian delights include the Autumn Sweet blend, fermented from crushed concord grapes harvested on blue moons. For those who visit the Columbus winery during friendly weather, the Simmons estate opens to a wine garden adorned with flower-lined paths, a gazebo, and shelter house.
