Due to an unfortunate typo, America's first beer festival was primarily attended by camera-toting apiarists and soon-to-be-miffed spelling-contest champions. Raise a glass to proofreading with today's Groupon: for $17, you get one ticket to Sippin' by the River (a $35 value) on Sunday, October 3, from 1 p.m.–5 p.m. at Penn's Landing.
The 16th-annual Sippin' by the River event corrals cuisine cravers and libation lovers for an afternoon of dining and drinks, with proceeds from the event benefitting the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Wash down sunshine and fresh air with beer and wine from vendors local (Harrisburg's Tröegs Brewing Company), national (Samuel Adams), and Jerseyian (Pompton Lakes' Boaks Beer). Beer expert Gary Monterosso will give pointers on the best brews, as well as instructions on which end of the cup is best for drinking beer from. Learn how to cook with your favorite beverages during live demonstrations, or keep things simple and savory with fine cuisine from vendors including Dietz & Watson and Hard Rock Café.
Unexplained foot shuffling and unplanned rhythmic movements at the event can be traced to the soundstage, where the 11-piece band Dame will perform renditions of time-tested oldies and popular hits. For sports fans worried about missing Donovan McNabb's return to the City of Brotherly Love when the Eagles take on the Washington Redskins, Sippin' by the River will have big-screen TVs broadcasting the game strategically placed around the festival. Toast to helmeted homecomings and charitable chugging with a trip to Sippin' by the River.
Must be 21 or older to consume alcohol. There is no re-entry to the festival.
