What You'll Get

We know this won't be an easy weekend for you. It's a great deal—and a chance at an extraordinary adrenaline rush—but do you have it in you to take the plunge? Maybe you're the career thrill-seeker who chews up adventure and spits out stories. Or maybe you're more like us, ordinary Janes and Joes, nine-to-fivers, worker bees who aren't sure they're cut out for real adventure. But here's a Groupon secret to transform your life: bees can fly.
Today's Groupon takes you 13,500 feet upward for a view reserved for falcons, then releases you, safely tethered to an experienced instructor from Skydive Dallas, for $149. Your package includes classroom instruction, gear rental, and a first-jump certificate.
Owners Lee and Carol Schlichtemeier fell head over heels for the sport after taking their first jumps in 1989. Their fleet includes a Super Caravan, a Cessna Skylane 182, and the world’s most beloved twin-engine skydiving aircraft, a twin-engine Dehaviland Super Otter.
From the drop zone 50 miles north of downtown Dallas, the sky is clear for unbelievable views as you fall from 13,500 feet in the air, then hover in what Wilber Wright called a "perfect peace mingled with an excitement that strains every nerve to the utmost" for about one minute of freefall. It feels like you're moving down a cushion of air.
People who are scared of heights expect to be scared stiff by jumping out of an airplane and hurtling through the air, but many of them are surprised to find they're totally comfortable. People who skydive say the feeling of pure freedom is unparalleled, the adrenaline rush is addictive, facing one's fears is satisfying, and falling out of the sky is pretty good. Plus, it isn't likely you'll wet your pants.
Call ahead to schedule your jump. Skydiving is the perfect way to celebrate a birthday, to sweat out premarital terror for a bachelor or bachelorette party, or to take a glorious leap into retirement. Buy a few Groupons and learn to skydive with people you trust; buy a few more and learn to dive with some people you're highly suspicious of and some friends you trust watching them. Either way, you only live once.
- Couldn't ask for anything more at a drop zone. Professional staff, knowledgable trainers [sic], great aircraft, huge facility with plenty of carpeted area to pack. I have nothing but positive things to say about skydive dallas. – Ben Melton, Facebook
- I've been jumping here for about 5 years and I always feel like I've "come home". – Madelyn C., Yelp
- This place has everything you need to go on the most exhilarating experience of your life. – Chris M., Yelp
Safe and carefully regulated skydiving remains a remarkable human feat. Beyond the sheer excitement of your tandem dive, you’ll also have the memories, sense of accomplishment, and perspective that only seeing the world from above can bring. Here’s a typical post-skydiving water cooler conversation:
“Oh, hey Eileen.”
“Hey, Dodger. How was your weekend?”
“Man, don’t get me started. I must’ve drank like seven Coke Zeros and stayed up all night watching Season 1 of Fringe. I mean, literally, the entire season. It was nuts. How about you?”
“Oh, not too much. I briefly left the world, cruising to altitudes untouched by the concerns of man, and then flew, as one might fly in a dream, unencumbered on a cushion of pure exhilaration, the clouds themselves swimming through my fingertips as the geometry of creation was laid out before me in the majestic perfection that surrounds us, hidden by its very enormity. Is Fringe worth checking out?”
