Bursting through yellow tape is rewarded with cheers at a race, but typically frowned upon by crime-scene detectives. Take a victory lap while avoiding gumshoes with today’s Groupon for entrance in one of the Slacker Races on Saturday, June 25, in Georgetown. Choose from the following options:
- For $17, you get entry for one person in the three-person half-marathon relay race (a $35 value/person).
- For $17, you get one entry in the 4-mile race (a $35 value).
- For $25, you get one entry in the half-marathon race (a $50 value).
Participants must register before June 10. Racers can pick up their timing chips on race day, beginning at 6 a.m. at Georgetown Lake, then catch the uphill shuttle to the starting line. Races start at 8:00 a.m.
The 10th annual Slacker Races send runners, joggers, and shufflers cascading towards sea level on one of the land’s longest downhill running slopes. The half marathon begins at 10,630 feet, pluming past miles of wetlands, waterfalls, and the Continental Divide as racers descend to 8,400 feet. Bring along two friends or four extra legs to pass the baton in the three-person relay. The 4-mile race travels down paved trails with scenic, wooly views of mammoth-size bighorn sheep, going from Silver Plume to Georgetown. Contestants are treated to water every 2 miles of the trek and Gatorade beginning at mile six. The absence of time limits ensures that slackers have plenty of time to perform midrace renditions of “Hamlet,” and a bounty of prizes, medals, food, drinks, and goodie bags await every racer at the finish line. One lucky racer will be chosen at random to saunter away with the coveted solar garden gnome, and two Ultimate Slacker prizes are granted to the last two racers to lurch across the finish line.
