Americano: Espresso Plus Water, But Not Vice Versa

Just as America itself combines the ideals of democracy with the majesty of miniature flags, the caffè americano combines the drinkability of coffee with the rich flavor of espresso. The coffeehouse classic contains equal parts espresso and hot water, resulting in a beverage with a drip-coffee consistency and a bold, smooth taste. Crucially, those ingredients must be combined in the right order—espresso before water. Pour the shots on top of the water and it becomes what’s known as a long black, which retains the froth from the espresso, giving it a different texture and flavor.
The name americano is both misleading and completely accurate: the beverage was created in Europe, but specifically for stateside tastes. Popular lore states that continental baristas created the drink for American G.I.s stationed abroad during World War II, since the combination of hot water and espresso more closely replicated the drip coffee they were accustomed to back home.
