What You'll Get

History is like Frankenstein's monster; all it takes to make it come alive is the right education, a large body of artifacts exhumed from the earth, and an electrical storm. Help preserve the past with today's Groupon: for $15, you get two tickets to the Preserving the Heritage Silent Auction benefiting Sloss Furnaces (a $30 Value). The auction will be held Sunday, June 26, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The second-annual Preserving the Heritage Auction will provide funding for an initiative to repair structural and masonry deterioration at Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark that helped to sustain the city of Birmingham for nearly a century. Nowadays the pipes and smokestacks of this iron-producing powerhouse play host to a yearlong assortment of community events. The Newgrass Troubadors, a local bluegrass band, will provide a live soundtrack for the event, and pieces of Sloss Furnaces and local artwork will be auctioned at a frequency audible only to dogs.

In addition to special events, Sloss Furnaces hosts educational programs and workshops designed to develop skills in the metal arts. A portion of all silent auction proceeds will be donated to American Red Cross’s tornado-recovery efforts. (1) It's free. (2) It's self-guided which is always a plus. (3) It's hauntingly beautiful. I wou... Read More

My family and I spent at least 4 hours there. I could have easily spent the entire day there with looking through my len... Read More
