About Smith's of Cohoes
Stepping into Smith's of Cohoes is like stepping back in time to the early 1900s. The building was originally constructed in 1873: it was a silent movie theater, then a pool hall, and finally, it became a tavern around the turn of the century. But the location truly became famous in 1937, when it was purchased by Michael T. Smith. At the time, "Big Mike" was one of the state's most colorful political leaders despite not being able to read or write.
Today, Smith's looks pretty much the same as it did when Big Mike ran the show. Inside, a 50-foot African mahogany bar—which is valued at more than $100,000—still stands as the bar's centerpiece, and in the dining room, an enormous stone fireplace brandishes the handiwork of a local Italian stonesman. The menu, meanwhile, brims with hearty American dishes, such as:
- Big Mike's Pork Porterhouse: this aptly named porterhouse chop is served with NY state apples and an apple brandy demi
- Pan-roasted half chicken:** another hearty entree, the half chicken arrives with a lemon herb gremolata and lemon-rosemary jus
- Shepherd's pie: It's a house favorite and it's packed with ground beef, mashed potatoes, and cheddar cheese
