Smokies Restaurant & Bar has been locals' go-to for classic, homestyle eats since 1998, and with good reason: Every single dish is made to order, from scratch. It's the restaurant's signature way of doing things. In fact, says co-owner Scott McBeath, when a regular comes in and orders an old favorite, the chef will sometimes make that dish even if it's not technically on the menu anymore. This is the sort of personalization and sense of community that one only finds at a local institution.
Although ordering off-menu is a special, little-known tip, most are content to order straight from the current selection, which teems with slow-roasted prime rib, indulgent fettucine Alfredo, and gourmet pizzas. Smokies' dedication to fresh, thoughtful fare doesn't stop at the plates, either. McBeath, along with fellow owner Tom Mercurio, is as passionate about craft beer, and the duo keeps taps stocked with Michigan-brewed concoctions.
