When Onya West started SocaMotion in 2010, she wanted to do more than give New Yorkers a fun, active way to work out--she wanted to show off the Caribbean music she grew up with. A contraction of "soul of calypso," soca is a fast-paced, irresistibly danceable form of an already foot-tapping genre, and that's what makes it the perfect soundtrack to an active cardio workout. All classes are set to the heart-pounding music, from SocaRaté, which incorporates kickboxing, to SocaStetix, which focuses on the abs. In SocaLates, students do muscle-lengthening Pilates moves, and in SocaBreakdown, they return to classic dances from yesteryear such as the Dollar Wine and the Shadow.
