Sail away from the daily grind and into the gentle, sweet-smelling grind of the Pacific Ocean with this Groupon, an hour-long sailing lesson with up to three of your friends at South Bay Sailing. South Bay’s down-to-earth, experienced sailsmen take you out and show you how to step the mast, rig the sail, and cruise out on the open water on a 26-foot boat.
South Bay is known for its racing and competitive sailing programs, and its instruction focuses on the performance aspect of sailing along with teaching the basics. Don’t be surprised if, after your lesson, you find yourself spending afternoons wondering about wind direction, hoisting makeshift mainsails in the garage, and pulling cleats and winches out of your pajama pant drawstring. Gliding gracefully and quietly across the ocean in a boat that needs no batteries, engine, or nuclear reactor is a sublime experience. Turning the boat to port or starboard is pretty good, too.
Take friends, family, or your friend’s family and teach them how to sail. Sailing is a skill that can last a lifetime, and a bout with three friends at South Bay is the perfect way to get started. Plus, you can purchase multiple hours if you crave more water gliding.

South Bay Sailing’s owner is a speed-sailing celeb. He’s been featured in Easy Reader and The Daily Breeze: > * …the man behind South Bay Sailing… cruises the Pacific on one of his four boats every day of the week. If he’s racing, all the better…. Averaging about three races a week in the summer, [he] aims to have students gain the skills needed to join him in weekly yacht club-sponsored races. – Megan Bagdonas, The Daily Breeze
How to Remember Sailing Terms
Experienced sailors are well-versed in boating terminology, but for beginners, here are some helpful tricks to remember what these sailing terms mean:
- Port: The port side is the left side of the boat and port has four letters, just like left.
- Starboard: Has nine letters, just like the words Carrot Top, which is why it denotes the side of the ship where Carrot Top is standing.
- Mast: Rhymes with past, and just like the past, is the part of the ship that sailors refuse to dwell on.
- Hull: The hull is a specific dream every sailor has towards the end of their careers in which hockey great Bobby Hull tells them, “It’s time. It’s time. It’s time.”
