Witness the life and times of legendary New York artist Mark Rothko in playwright John Logan's Tony winner Red, which comes to the illustrious stage at Orange County's South Coast Repertory. The story centers on Rothko in 1958 as he considers the emergence of pop art and readies a commissioned painting for the ritzy Four Seasons restaurant; his fictionalized assistant, the naïve yet inquisitive Ken, is tasked with mixing the paint and readying the canvass, but he's soon challenging Rothko's stance on modern art and questioning his decision to create such a commercial work. After Rothko asks Ken a seemingly simple question -- "What do you see?" -- an engaging conversation on life, art and artists emerges, and the two principal characters -- originally played by actors Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne -- deepen and come to life on stage.
This show is recommended for kids of high school age and older. It contains adult language.
