Wool duct-taped to sleepy sheep and thumb-tacked into mammoth fossils longs to take more exciting and shapely forms. Indulge its form-fitting fantasies with today’s Groupon: for $90, you get a beginning speed-knitting class at South West Trading Company in Deer Valley (a $190 total value).
South West Trading Company, which provides earth-friendly yarns to knitters around the world, is joining Phoenix-area knitting gurus to offer a speed knitting for beginners package that includes all necessary materials. The package weaves together these essential strands:
- Four and a half hours of knitting instruction ($100 value)
- Five balls of Therapi yarn ($50 value)
- Instructional booklet ($10 value)
- Cable needle ($5 value)
- Knitting needles ($5 value)
- Goody bag ($10 value)
- Copy of The SWTC Karaoke Hat Collection ($10 value)
Novice knitters will find plenty to purl about as they spend a relaxing few hours learning all the woolly basics. SWTC founder and multiple-knitting-book scribe Jonelle Raffino and other ace local instructors will share wisdom about casting on and binding off, stitches (stockinette, purl, seed, and garter), cabling, yarn overs, buttonholes, and mistake cover-ups. They’ll also demonstrate advanced projects to inspire your needles to future greatness. By the end of class, newly knowledgeable knotters will have nearly finished a charming bowlder-wool-silk-blend scarf. Pupils will leave with plenty of yarn and the know-how (and the pattern) to finish the scarf and knit nets to catch narcoleptic owls.
Along with the Therapi yarn, the package includes a goody bag stuffed to the gills with knitting needles, a cable hook, and coupons from local and online yarn-slingers. Students also receive a list of upcoming Phoenix-area classes in case knitting fever takes hold, which is a highly beneficial condition from the point of view of babies’ heads and feet.
Classes are held at various times on select Saturdays and Sundays but will generally be held at 9 a.m. or 1 p.m. Reserve ahead of time for the best spot.
