Though it is illegal for pranksters to shout about non-existent fires in a theater, shrieking after an encounter with an underseat gum wad is permissible. Shout about what's on stage instead with today's deal: for $9, you get a ticket to your choice of upcoming theater productions at Southern Rep (up to a $35 value).
Southern Rep delivers new plays from modern American playwrights with a talented cast of local and national thespians. Upcoming productions include afterlife: a ghost story (October 21–November 7), which follows two people as they prepare to confront a giant wave and remain relatively dry, and the special holiday-themed Snow Girls (December 3–19), from local comedy troupe Running With Scissors. Patrons who prefer to have their heartstrings and funny bones simultaneously stimulated will be enchanted with the regional premiere of the one-man show Intríngulis (March 11–19), an autobiographical play by film and Sesame Street alum Carlo Alban as he recounts his family's private struggle with immigration and solving Friday New York Times crossword puzzles.
The small, 145-seat performance space virtually guarantees a prime view and ensures an intimate experience between actor and audience. While this deal is not valid toward opening night performances, buyers can take comfort in enjoying a polished, kink-free production later in the run or opt to attend a preview staging, and then return to whisper plot spoilers in the ears of late arrivers before vanishing in a cloud of vapor.
Southern Rep was mentioned on BroadwayWorld.com and the theater's recent production of In the Next Room (or the vibrator play), written by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Sarah Ruhl, was reviewed by the Times-Picayune. The theater is highly recommended by Frommer's and has more than 1,000 Facebook fans:
- the tonal shift of the second act is elegantly presented. This is due in no small part to Aimee Hayes’ elegant and pitch-perfect direction. Hayes balances the humor of Ruhl’s witty, incisive dialogue with just the right touch of melancholy it is intended to hide. – Theodore P. Mahne, Times-Picayune
- the Southern Rep is comfortable, intimate, and easily accessible from all downtown and French Quarter hotels. Expect to find productions by or (occasionally) about famous Southern playwrights (though not exclusively), projects by local playwrights, and even world premieres. – Frommer's
