Today’s Groupon comes to praise Caesar, not to bury him. Lose the CliffsNotes and Twitterature and experience Shakespeare in its intended nonedible form: for $15, you’ll get a ticket to the performance of your choice of Southwest Shakespeare Company’s Julius Caesar at the Mesa Arts Center (up to a $33.50 value). Choose from a variety of dates from January 14 through closing night on January 23. Main-floor and front-of-the-balcony seats mean you won’t have to strain to see every stab of the knife.
Southwest Shakespeare Company, a nonprofit professional theater company, presents the stunning story surrounding the death of Caesar and its aftermath. Set in the American Civil War (and featuring a time-travelling Caesar sent from the future), the epic tale features awe-inducing costumes, sets, and classic Shakespearean dialogue such as “Shut up, mister,” and “Hey, look over there.” A director’s orientation before the curtain will help demystify the experience for puzzled playgoers. Time-traveling Elizabethans should be able to follow it all right, though. Buy one for your alternate-history-reading friend and show him what the world would be like if Shakespeare had won the Civil War.
This Groupon will get you a main-floor orchestra section OR front balcony seat. Seating section is based on availability for each show. You must call in advance (beginning January 13 at 10 a.m.) to reserve seats.
Most theatergoers are too busy watching Brutus stab Caesar to death to write reviews, but ShowUp users love the Southwest Shakespeare Company: > * Great acting and characterization by all. A Shakespeare plays succeeds when actors make centuries-old verse appear modern. We’re lucky to have this Company in the Phoenix area. – [Stacy J] > * Wonderful, phenomenal and absolutely professional! Enjoyed every second. Worth the trip from North Phoenix. – [Robin]
