The Issue: High Numbers of Animals Euthanized Across the Country
In seven years, one unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens, while one unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 97,000 puppies, according to the ASPCA. Many of these animals are part of the approximately six to eight million homeless cats and dogs that enter animal shelters every year across the country, according to data from the Humane Society of the United States. Roughly half of these animals are adopted, and the other half are euthanized. Spaying and neutering pets helps reduce the number of homeless animals and shelter overpopulation, which often results in euthanasia.
The Campaign: Vaccinate and Sterilize Abandoned Animals
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Spay/Neuter Coalition, Inc to vaccinate and spay or neuter pets in low-income areas. The first $500 raised will be used by the organization to vaccinate 200 cats and dogs. Each additional $10 raised will go toward spay or neuter procedures for the vaccinated animals. These treatments help reduce the number of homeless animals in low-income neighborhoods as part of the organization’s Trailer Park Outreach Project.
Spay/Neuter Coalition, Inc.
Across Georgia, mobile home parks, rural areas, and low-income neighborhoods dot the landscape, breaking up farms, cities, and countryside. Spay/Neuter Coalition, Inc. targets these neighborhoods because many of the residents have unsterilized pets, resulting in high populations of stray cats and dogs. Volunteers conducted its first Trailer Park Project as outreach to prevent pet overpopulation, working with 65 units to spay and neuter more than 100 pets. During these projects, volunteers discover and transport the animals, and low-cost clinics examine them and provide sterilization treatments, vaccinations, flea prevention, and surgery. Volunteers also distribute pet food and collars to owners in need. Throughout the year Spay/Neuter Coalition also offers referrals, hosts clinics, and obtains sponsorships for spay/neuter surgeries, and performs outreach at a variety of local events including festivals, parades, and football games.
